Research: Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin suggest that today's pop videos can't be applied to the traditional narrative analysis.
He gave reasons for the different narrative structures. For example

  • Pop videos are built around songs
  • Pop video uses the singer as both character and narrator
  • also the singer often looks at the camera
During the chorus usually there is a repetition of images. Pop songs don't have depend on an ending and closure most videos are 3min  single that have an end this is similarly structured like the song what happens as he said that it builds into a climax or to a constant repetition before fading away.

The idea was that the visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning. There is diferent relations between the video and the song:

  1. Illustration: Its more narrative tells us the story from the lyrics.
  1. Amplification: When there no relations to the lyrics and gives a new meaning
  1. Disjuncture: Theres a minor relation to the lyric or where the video contradicts the lyrics
An example of disjuncture "man in the mirror" by Micheal Jackson
