RESEARCH: A summary of the main points of Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin believes that traditional narratives can not be applied to Pop videos, they have whole different purpose far away from being a film or a movie. The reasons for this aspect of his theory, are as follows:
  • Pop videos are structured around the soundtracks. (most songs don not really have a narrative structure)
  • Pop videos place the artist(s) as the narrator and a character, within the video.
  • The artist(s) directly observe the camera, providing that feel of a direct performance betwee artist and viewer.
These videos rely on repetition, the video will tend to repeat parts of the video, in similarity to how a chorus is repeated. This creates a expectation, as we become familiar witht his effect and asscoiate it with a convention of a Pop video. The video would be played through various media platforms, such as, TV, Radio or through TV Advertising. Also, the video builds a tension, which builds up to a climax, which is something that the viewer would expect.

There are 3 types of relations between songs and videos:

  • Illustration: The video tells the story of the lyric, dance is utilised to express the feelings/moods in the song.

  • Amplification: The video brings in a new meaning but doesn't contradict the lyrics.

  • Disjuncture: There is little connection between the lyric and the video, for example, Michael Jackson's Man in the mirror, is about reflecting on one's self, however the video is full of world events.
