RESEARCH: Laura Mulvey's ideas on representation

''In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly'' (Laura Mulvey, 1992)

Laura Mulvey's theory of representation, demonstrates the idea that women are presented a male object of desire, which in some music videos, you can see this clearly, the video above is Pitbull - Hotel room, which shows a range of women dressed in a sexually explicit manner, clearly a figure of desire amongst the male audience, in the medium shots in relation to the chorus, he has 3 women behind him caressing him with close physical contact, he is clearly illustrating the 'fantasy idea, of having women at his disposal. His gaze is amplified, aswell, he wears his shades, to give him a sense of supremacy and his eye contact with the various women shown in this video, suggest that he is irresistable to his female accomplices.

This is Nicki Minaj - Super Bass, in which, there a re few cotradictions in regards the some of the conventions, stated by Mulvey. In this video, the female artist is active and is the main focus, as she observes directly in to the camera, however, she is dressed up in a sexually explicit manner and has topless built men, at her disposal, one can say, that they are projecting the idea of fanstasy on her, however, they are the passive characters in this video. She also, pours a pink juice all over her chest and is in a pool, this also demonstrates the idea of fantasy for the male audience.
