Research for Music Video: Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey quoted is : In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active male and passive female."

What Laura Mulvey means by this is that, women are shown to be a sexual object for men to project their fantasy onto the female figure, which is helped by the styling of the clothing. For example a beautiful woman in a bikini, the male is now active and the female is passive.

Mulvey discusses the idea that women are "dismembered" that the music video contains the camera focusing not the body as a whole, but rather on certain parts such as the bum, legs and breast, and that men are shown as a whole. However there are controversial issues with such artists such as Beyonce, Mulvey says that these passive females never look directly into the camera, however Beyonce looks straight into the camera and then becomes an active female, however she has costumes which allow the male gaze to project their fantasy upon.
